Situated on the south-east coast of the Canary Island Fuerteventura, Gran Tarajal is with roughly 7.000 inhabitants one of the biggest villages on the island. Despite its size, Gran Tarajal is still a quiet place away from mass tourism. People here mainly life on fishery and tomato farming.

Main feature of the coastal village is its dark sand which dominates the promenades with its small boutiques and shops. The promenades are doted with inviting stone benches under fanpalms where the locals come together for a chat. Local restaurants invite to have a taste of Canary fish plates with freshly caught fish by the fishermen who have their anchorage ground just on the harbour.

The mountainous countryside around Gran Tarajal is dominated by red lava. Build on a hillside, the village is embedded by the mountains on one and the harbour on the other side. The picturesque countryside is perfect for hikes and mountain tours which take visitors to the mountain tops that rank from 200 to 600 metres. From there, they enjoy the view over the small alleys in Gran Tarajal and the ocean behind it.

Attractions in Gran Tarajal include the church Nuestra Senora de la Candelaria which was donated by rich emigrants coming home from Cuba to live here. Situated in the village centre, the church invites to sit in the shadow of date trees and to enjoy the spray of the picturesque fountain decorated with sea horses which stands in the centre of the market place.

The beautiful city park is dominated by the Canary date tree of which nowhere on the island can be found as many as here. The park invites visitors to a peaceful and relaxing walk through the lovingly arranged plantation. A sight to behold are the small shopping streets in the centre of the village.

For those looking for entertainment, the spry night life comes with beach bars and discos. Local entertainment also includes the Canary wrestling arena, where regular wrestling matches are held. Gran Tarajal also regularly invites to concerts, faires and matches of any kind.
